Iowa Republican Rep. Tom Latham announced Tuesday he will not run for re-election in 2014, according to the Des Moines Register. He is the third lawmaker to announce retirement plans today, including Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., and Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah.

Like Wolf, Latham represents a competitive GOP-held district in which Democrats are likely to make a bid for a pickup. President Obama carried Latham's Des Moines-based district in 2012, 51%-47%. Matheson represents a conservative district that Republicans will be favored to win in 2014 with no incumbent in the race.

Latham, 65, is a member of the historic 1994 class, which swept Republicans in to power in the U.S. House after decades in the minority. He has been one of House Speaker John Boehner's closest friends and allies.
