Sedalia, NC-- Maria Cole, widow of music legend Nat King Cole, will visit the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum State Historic Site on Monday, June 9th.

The invitation only event is part of an honor ceremony for Dr. Brown, who is also her aunt. Mrs. Cole will receive the Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown Living Legacy Award.

At one time, the school was considered one of America's most prestigious African American prep schools. It was also known as Palmer Memorial Institute. Palmer was Maria Cole's childhood home and also where she was educated.

The state historic site is where the late Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, began teaching children in Sedalia in 1902.

For 50 years after founding PMI, Dr. Brown continued to educate young people, building what started out as a tiny academy into a highly renowned African American school.

Maria Cole played a key role in helping make the former school a historic site in North Carolina.
