Winston-Salem, NC -- Forsyth Medical Center says the economy is to blame for the hospital cutting 48 jobs.
Forsyth Medical Center and Medical Park Hospital are both affected by the layoffs. Positions will be cut from administration, managerial, clinical support and business offices.
Hospital officials say the jobs are being eliminated in the areas where they continue to see reduced patient demand.
"This is a move that we clearly would have preferred not to make." says hospital spokeswoman Freda Springs. "This country is still in the middle of the worst recession in two generations and healthcare providers are not immune from the financial challenges that virtually every other industry sector in our country is experiencing."
Springs says a reduction in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, lower demand for elective healthcare services and patients postponing seeking healthcare all affect the financial stability of the healthcare system.
