Winston-Salem, NC -- Financial officers plan to continue collecting business license fees from Internet sweepstakes businesses in Winston-Salem.
The 50 Internet sweepstakes businesses must pay $2,500 each plus $500 per machine.
City Chief Financial Officer, Denise Bell says that money was due July 1.
A statewide Internet sweepstakes ban could force them to close by December 1.
"Those fifty were operating July 1," said Bell "and that means the business license fees that the city budgeted equivalent to a half a million dollars are still due and payable and we will work this month to execute on those payments."
Winston-Salem is depending on the fees to help with its current operating budget.
City workers will issue a citation against the businesses that haven't paid and pursue legal action if necessary.
