King, NC -- The fight over a Christian flag at the Veteran's Memorial in King went before the City Council Monday night.

Hundreds of people filled King Elementary School's auditorium to weigh in on what to do about the flag.

The city took the flag down last month after an Afghanistan war veteran complained that it violated the First Amendment and the American Civil Liberties Union threatened a lawsuit.

Monday night, the City Council heard comments on three options: Permanently removing the Christian flag; designating the single flag pole to display flags only religious flags or symbols recognized by the U.S. Military; or to transfer the Memorial to a private entity such as a Veterans group.

Some veterans have been manning the park with their own temporary Christian flag since last month. They plan to stay at the Memorial until October 23rd, when a rally is planned.

No final decision was made by King's City Council in Monday night's meeting.
