Surry County, NC -- The Surry County Board of Elections said some voters at their smaller precincts showed up to vote Tuesday morning, but were delayed because of a problem with the poll books.

Hugh Campbell, Chairman with the Surry County Board of Elections said the names of republican and some unaffiliated voters were "inadvertently omitted" from the paper poll book at the county's smaller precincts.

Campbell said as soon as the problem was discovered, the poll books were rerun and delivered to each precinct by 9:30 am.

He said all voters were able to vote with a paper provisional ballot. The biggest complaint was a backlog with the paper ballots, causing people to wait longer. Campbell said if that is the case, they will take steps to address that.

Campbell admits there was a mistake, but insures all votes will be counted.

There are 22 precincts using paper poll books in Surry County. Their seven larger precincts use electronic machines. There was never a problem with the electronic machines.

Surry County has extended voting hours until 8:30 to help alleviate any issues from the delay.
