Greensboro, NC -- The Guilford County School Board met Tuesday night and talked about two important subjects: school bonds and calendar make-up days.
BONDS: The board discussed the possibility of delaying some of the 2008 bond projects. The 2008 bond included 29 major projects, many of which were designed to relieve school overcrowding.
Chief Operations Officer Andrew LaRowe said the county commissioners asked the board to delay some of the projects for one year, to the next fiscal period.
"We've been looking very carefully to see which projects, you know in the event that there needs to be a delay, would have the least impact to certainly the needs of the school district, immediate needs of the school district and that would satisfy the needs for the board of county commissioners," LaRowe said.
In the end, the school board voted nine to one to delay the construction on the Airport Area High School and Southeast Elementary School, and the Allen Jay Middle school renovation project. The district can still buy the land, and go through the design process, but they will not start construction on the projects.
MAKE-UP DAYS: The board also talked about calendar make up days. They had two options for a way to handle three make up days. Option ONE involved adding three days onto the end of the school calendar. Option TWO was to add two days on the end of the school year and make March 29th an instructional day. The 29th was originally scheduled to be a teacher work day, which would be moved to Saturday, April 2.
According to school board member Kris Cooke, they voted for the second option and will make March 29th an instructional day if they need to use it. There is still one snow day available in the calendar.
