Asheboro, NC -- Local students are joining our Great Hang Up campaign, encouraging others to put away their cell phone while driving.

"Just put the phone down while you're at the wheel. That's all," said Asheboro High School Junior Brittany Spencer.

Spencer, the 11th grade class president, saw our campaign and started an effort at her school. Students are watching Great Hang Up stories and signing our pledge.

They're also holding a "Dead Day" on Thursday. Students will dress in black and won't talk as a visual reminder of what happens when you text and drive.

Spencer said, "I've had people come to me and say, I'm really glad you're doing this, I knew someone who died from this. And I'm really glad that I brought it to everyone's attention."

Spencer said she knows her classmates text and drive. She wants to show them it's not a good idea. "I want them to know how dangerous it is. And I want to graduate with every single person that I walked into school with. And I know that may not happen if they're texting and driving," she said.

Spencer is a volunteer firefighter and knows what can happen when people use their phones and drive.

"I really don't like it when I have to see someone my age sitting on the side of the road and they have lost their life because they thought they wanted to talk to their friends," said Spencer.
