Davidson County, NC -- Two pedestrians were killed along Highway 52 in Davidson County early Tuesday morning.
Highway Patrol said the two people were killed just after 2am when they were hit by a car in the southbound lanes near mile marker 92 in the Welcome area.
Trooper Terry Buie said that the preliminary investigation indicates a man and a woman parked their mini-van on the side of the northbound lanes of US 52. He said the couple got out of their vehicle, crossed the median and cable guardrail and then were struck in the southbound lanes.
Buie said an unknown vehicle hit the couple and left the scene. Troopers are looking for that vehicle that may have some front end damage.
Two other vehicles then hit the bodies. Those drivers returned to the scene and one of them called 911 around 2:11am.
Trooper Buie said it appears that the incident may have began with a domestic situation between the man and woman that were killed.
The family of the female victim has been notified. Her identity has not been released. The identity of the male victim is still unknown.
A crash reconstruction team is assisting with the investigation of the incident.
The incident shut down US 52 for several hours Tuesday morning. All lanes have since been reopened.
