Graham, NC --The City of Graham is using confiscated drug money in an interesting way.

Drug busts happen all the time. While the seized drugs are destroyed, the drug money adds up.

Graham Police Chief Jeff Prichard said every year, folks in Alamance County honor fallen police officers. However, they want to be able to honor police officers, firefighters and EMS year-round with a Fallen Heroes Memorial.

The memorial committee hopes to build the memorial right next to the Children's Museum, where the city has donated land.

The committee has been raising money for it since 2008, when a firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

Recently, Prichard asked that $12,500 in drug money be donated to the memorial.

This week, the city council unanimously approved it.

"We want to remember those fallen officers who have paid the ultimate price in the line of service. It is an acceptable use. We typically use it for equipment, but this is a unique thing," said Prichard.

The committee has set up a website to raise money for the fallen officers memorial. You can visit for more details.
