WFMY -- It's been a week of celebration and panic for little Jaxx Denny's parents, and all of us who have been praying for him, but today we can all breath a little easier.

Baby Jaxx is on the mend.

On Tuesday, Jaxx had surgery to expand the metal rods in his back and ribcage, so he can continue to grow.

Doctors told Pete and Tammy Denny the surgery was a success, but overnight, Jaxx took a turn for the worse as he struggled to recover.

On Wednesday, Jaxx was fighting a fever and doctors had to put him on a ventilator to help him breath. Doctors told the Dennys, Jaxx's heart was working too hard to pump blood to his right lung.

By Thursday, doctors told the Pete and Tammy Denny that Jaxx's condition was critical and he could go into cardiac arrest.

"Yesterday was the hardest day Tammy and I have ever went thru. We could have lost Jaxx very easily," Pete Denny said in an email to News 2's Lauren Melvin. "We've never been so scared."

Doctors went to work and by Friday morning, Jaxx was on the mend.

"We are making very small steps to recovery right now, but good steps. We all thought this would be a simple expansion but learned its just not going to be simple with Jaxx," said Denny.

The Dennys hope to return home sometime next week. They wanted to thank everyone for their prayers.

If you want to help Jaxx, you can leave a prayer or some kind words on the News 2 Facebook page.

The Dennys are starting a Team Jaxx Foundation, so they can raise money for Jaxx and kids just like him. They're still waiting to get the official paperwork back from the IRS, but as soon as they do, we'll let you know of more ways you can help.
