Greensboro, NC -- One house fire was reported every 85 seconds in 2010.  That number is according to the Greensboro Fire Department and is one reason why on Saturday the department encouraged you to have more than one way out.

It was their first fire safety day extravaganza, to promote fire prevention week that's coming up October 8-14.

The theme focused on the importance of fire escape planning and practice, and fire officials are encouraging everyone to make sure they have two ways to exit the house, in case one exit is blocked by fire.

And that's just one way make sure your family is safe.

"We teach an assembly point.  If the child makes it outside of the home before the parents do.  If it's a mailbox if it's a tree, the kids know that if I get out of the home I need to go here and wait for Mommy and Daddy," said Chief Todd Lynch, Greensboro Fire Dept. Deputy Fire Marshal.

Here are some tips for planning your family's escape in the event of a fire:

  • Make a map of your home and then mark a door and window that can be used to get out of every room
  • Designate a meeting place outside in front of your home where everyone knows to meet
  • Get an adult to sound the fire alarm
  • Practice your escape plan a couple times a year
