Greensboro, NC-- For 18 years a Triad grocery store has made it a mission to feed neighbors and friends by hosting annual food drives.

Thursday, the 2012 'Friends Feeding Friends' food drive started.

From now until December 31, Lowes Foods is collecting food donations that will be delivered to local food bank agencies in the areas they are collected.

The food drive is not just across North Carolina, it includes Lowes Food stores in South Carolina and Virginia. It's the largest one of its kind in the home  state of the store which is North Carolina.

Donations bins are available and customers can purchase pre-made bags already stocked for donation. The kindness of Businesses and civic groups also makes the event a success.

How great is the need? Clyde Fitzgerald with Second Harvest Food Bank told WFMY News 2 they serve an 18 county region and 100 programs in Greensboro alone. Fitzgerald said comparing grits to grits the need has increased in all counties.

In the Triad two largest cities, Fitzgerald said 24 percent of people in Winston-Salem live below the poverty level, with 38% of children in the city living in poverty or below.

In Greensboro he said 20% of people in the city are living at or below the poverty level.
