Pilot Mountain -- The Pilot Mountain fire continues to burn while firefighters continue to contain it.
The weather can be a firefighter's best friend or worst enemy when battling a forest fire. A good soaking rain would obviously be at the top of their wish list. High winds are at the very bottom.
Over the next few days, here's what they should expect. Temperatures will continue to be unseasonable warm. Highs will range in the low 70s on Sunday and the upper 60s on Tuesday. The winds shouldn't be much of a hinderance. Winds will be out of the south but should remain less than 10 mph and could even be calm at times.
Rain is another story. A cold front is approaching from the west. It will bring an increase in clouds on Monday but only a 20% chance of a sprinkle or shower. The better rain chance comes in on Monday night and Tuesday. Even though the chance of rain is 70%, rain totals shouldn't be all that high. Most places should range from 0.25 to 0.50" before the front clears the area.
If the fire isn't out by mid week, we will return to sunny and dry conditions.
