Winston-Salem, NC -- The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board approved funding for one option that could bring a new football stadium to RJ Reynolds High School.

The board approved the stadium option 6-3 in its Tuesday night meeting.

The decision doesn't guarantee the stadium will be built, according to Superintendent Dr. Don Martin. It means the board is authorizing fundraisers to raise money for the stadium option the board selected.

The option includes a stadium with no more than 2,500 seats and a practice field for the team, probably located on Reynolda Road. The plan also includes replacing the Wiley Middle School gym and renovating Bryson Gym.

The board allowed the public to speak on the issue, with supporters and opponents coming forward. Supporters say they want the school to have a true home field, while those against the stadium cite noise and traffic as issues.

Martin estimates the project will cost $7.5-$8.5 million, and it could be more expensive due to the addition of Bryson Gym to the plan.

There is still a lot of work to do before the stadium can be built, and Martin says all the funds have to be raised before construction can begin.
