Greensboro, NC -- Everything has a purpose, but that doesn't mean you have to use it for just one purpose. Take a bunch of chicken wire for example. Who says you only need it to fence in yard birds?

What if you added a few strands of Christmas lights to the wire and made a magnificent display by putting them in trees. A display that causes traffic jams and also helps those less fortunate.

Its' possible. You just need vision. Jonathan Smith's daughter had it and she convinced him years ago that chicken wire could in fact feed people.

Smith's daughter saw a grapevine ball wrapped with Christmas lights hanging from a tree. Her idea was to make them out chicken wire. When people started stopping and asking about the decorations, she saw the opportunity to be a light to the community.

The neighborhood joined in and set up a trailer so that passerby's and holiday on-lookers could "pay a fee" of sorts for the beauty. Simply, bring a can a food. Fast forward years later and in 2011, Shine A Light On Hunger gave Second Harvest Food Bank more than 7,000 pounds of food!

Drive through the Sunset Hills neighborhood (on Market Street by Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro) this season and bring a can or two of food with you.

Jonathan joined us for our 5 pm and 6 pm newscasts and built one of the lights to show you step by step what to do.
