Boone, NC -- Officers arrested two Boone men for their roles in a drug distribution network in the college town early Saturday, police say.

The arrests came after a five-year investigation.

Narcotics officers worked with the Watauga County sheriff's office, Boone police, the State Bureau of Investigation, the N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to make the arrests.

The agencies spent the past five years looking into what police called a "closely knit network" of methamphetamine distribution in Watauga County.

Police arrested 39-year-old Luis Enrique Garcia, the man they believe to be the ringleader, along with Javier Gomez Sanchez, Saturday morning.

Officers searched Garcia's apartment and seized a "large amount" of money, drug paraphernalia and about a pound of meth--a $57,120 street value.

The law enforcement agencies worked together, using physical and electronic surveillance to investigate the activities. The police and sheriff's K-9 units were used in the case as well.

"This case is a real victory for law enforcement and the citizens of Boone, as well as all of Watauga County," said Chief Dana Crawford. "This seizure will definitely have an impact on the drug trade in our region for some time."
