Greensboro, NC -- The flu got an early start for the worst season in 10 years.

North Carolina is a "high risk" state for getting the flu.

Director of infection control at Morehead Memorial Hospital said, "Flu activity began earlier this year and has been more severe. According to the CDC, they cannot say for certain how severe the season will be but can say that a lot of people are getting sick with influenza and influenza-like-illness. Most people did not anticipate an early flu season since our peaks are usually in December, January and February. CDC encouraged flu vaccine as soon as the season began. Even though people that received the vaccine have tested positive for the flu, it is hoped that the symptoms will be less severe."

She said anyone with the flu should avoid gatherings like work, school and church. Stay at home, get plenty of rest and fluids. She also said it's important to avoid children, pregnant women and the elderly.
