Troy, NC-- A former principal and transportation director is facing charges of inappropriate behavior with a student.

According to a news release from Montgomery County Schools, John Ward, 55, transportation director with Montgomery County Schools, was arrested on Jan. 14. He was charged with Indecent Liberties with a Student and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile.

Ward resigned on Monday, Jan. 14 and is no longer employed with Montgomery County Schools, officials said.

Statement from Superintendent Dale Ellis:

Over the course of a school year, district personnel receive a multitude of complaints and allegations of employee wrong-doing. That is not surprising in a system with over 4,000 students and 600 employees. We take great care to investigate every issue and to respond to each allegation seriously and appropriately. When we investigate allegations, if there is any indication that inappropriate behaviors have occurred, we always report that information to law enforcement immediately and take proper steps in our employee disciplinary procedures.

Although this situation is very disturbing and upsetting - it does not define who we are. It is sad that it might somehow overshadow the tremendous work that our employees do on a daily basis -- being leaders and role models for our students.

It is already a part of our annual process to remind employees about inappropriate relationships with students. However, we will continue to evaluate existing and additional training opportunities to ensure that employees understand the importance of keeping the student-educator relationship professional.

School personnel said they found out after getting a tip at the main office and reported it to the Sheriff's Office. The investigation led to Monday's arrest.

Ward was employed with Montgomery County Schools (MCS) as a Project Class coordinator on Aug. 5, 2002. During his time with MCS, he also worked as a band director, assistant principal and principal. Ward was arrested on charges stemming from an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student while he was principal at Montgomery Learning Academy.

As a part of regular procedures, MCS conducts extensive background checks on all employees. Additionally, employees are reminded annually of Prohibited Relationships with Students as a part of the MCS Employee Handbook review.

MCS says will continue to cooperate with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office as it completes its investigation.
