Greensboro, NC - It's been 11-months of planning and construction, but Ronald E. McNair Elementary School is set to open February 4th.

Students and staff were given a tour of the new building Friday. Students visited their classrooms and saw the new cafeteria, media center and other key rooms.

The building is nearly ready to open as of Friday. Crews finished moving supplies, furniture, technology equipment and teachers' personal classroom materials into the school.

"We know students and staff are excited to come together in their new building," said Northern Regional Superintendent Dr. Randy Shaver. "The McNair Elementary family has done a great job working together through these challenges, and we are looking forward to finishing out the school year under one roof."

McNair Elementary serves approximately 450 students in grades K-5. Since the beginning of the school year, McNair has operated at two locations: Jesse Wharton Elementary and Brightwood Elementary. Staff and students were divided between the two sites.

In September 2012, the Guilford County Board of Education voted to terminate its contract with Farley Associates, Inc., the original contractor responsible for the construction of McNair Elementary, located at 4603 Yanceyville Road in Brown Summit. JE Dunn oversaw the project's completion and resumed construction in October.

Students will visit their new school in groups this Friday, Feb. 1, taking GCS buses to their new school. While there, they will tour the building, visit their classrooms, and see where the cafeteria, media center and other key rooms are located.

Students begin learning at the new facility on Monday, February 4th.
