Biscoe, NC -- A North Carolina-based company says it plans to build a solar farm in Montgomery County by the end of the year.

O2 Energies, based in Cornelius, NC, says it will build a 6.3 megawatt solar farm off Highway 220 in Biscoe. It will be one of the first and largest solar farms in the state.

O2 Energies already owns two solar projects in Surry County: the Mayberry Solar Project and the Ararat Rock Solar Project; together the two farms are the size of the future Biscoe site.

Construction at the Biscoe site will begin some time between April and June, and spokesman Joel Olson says the project should be completed by the end of the year.

Olson says the farm will employ at least 50 people; most of those jobs will be in construction.

O2 Energies will invest $15 million into the county for this project. Olson says the company is considering a second project in Montgomery County, which would put O2's total investment at more than $50 million.

Olson did not have any further information on the second location.

Olson says O2 chose land in Biscoe because of its central location and the area's provincial and recreational nature. He says the farm will do more than bring clean energy to Montgomery County.

"We'll bring more business to the area," Olson said.

O2 Energies and the Town of Biscoe will hold a news conference Tuesday to officially announce the solar farm.
