Asheville, NC (ACT) - A former city police officer who spanked a young child hard enough to cause significant bruising pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor child abuse.

Aubrey Gerrard Green, 28, received a sentence in Buncombe County Superior Court of 60 days in jail suspended for 12 months.

Green also was ordered to perform 24 hours of community service within 30 days, pay a $100 fine and continue getting the 3-year-old girl counseling, Assistant District Attorney Megan Apple said.

Green was arrested on the child abuse charge Nov. 9 and placed on administrative leave the same day. He resigned from the Police Department in December.

An arrest warrant states that Green injured the child by "striking the buttocks hard enough to cause significant bruising." He is not the child's father.

District Attorney Ron Moore said the injury was discovered when the girl's grandmother took her to the Buncombe County Department of Social Services, which opened an investigation and notified law enforcement.

"North Carolina does not prohibit corporal punishment, but you also cannot cause serious injury," Moore said.

Green joined the department in December 2007 and worked as a patrol officer in West Asheville.

He was off duty at the time of the incident.
