Greensboro -- WFMY News 2 learned 17-year-old, Josh Level died from myocarditis on Monday.

The teen collapsed while playing basketball and died after being taken to the hospital.

Tuesday, WFMY News 2 learned more about myocarditis, a virus that affects the heart, from the Cone Health System

"I've seen it several times in young athletes that we were lucky enough to catch before they went back to activity," said Dr. Bert Fields, Director of Sports Medicine in the Cone Health System.  "But I can think of a couple of other deaths in this area that occurred because of this."

Dr. Fields said 1 in 500,000 high school athletes might be prone to dying from viral myocarditis. He also says, most times it goes away on its own and doesn't lead to death,

Dr. Fields also added, one in 1,000 viral infections could lead to some inflammation of the heart.

As for preventing it, Dr. Fields told WFMY News 2 there isn't much you can do other than wash your hands.
