Greensboro, NC -- A very atypical weather pattern for early April has descended over Triad and has brought a good mix of winter weather.

Sleet began to fall across the Piedmont midway through Thursday morning. Pockets of sleet continued into the afternoon as even a few snowflakes mixed with sleet and rain. At times the sleet became heavy enough to cause minor accumulations on elevated surfaces before quickly melting.

A trace of snow was officially reported at the Piedmont Triad International Airport which was enough to tie the record for daily maximum snowfall. The old record was set in 1992.

Phone calls and social media posts flooded into the WFMY News 2 Information Center as people all over the Triad witnessed this rare spring sight.

The heaviest of the rain/sleet/snow mix has ended and will give way to light rain showers with only isolated pockets of sleet and snow through Thursday evening.

Temperatures through Thursday night will remain in the upper 30s with periodic light rain showers.

The rain will taper off early Friday morning and give way to a gradually clearing sky Friday afternoon. High temperatures Friday will return to the upper 50s to near 60 degrees.
