Winston-Salem, NC -- Two sightings of a black bear were reported in Winston-Salem late Thursday night and early Friday morning.
Police in Winston-Salem said a woman who lives in the 2600 block of Wynbrook Drive first spotted the bear in her backyard shortly before 11:30 pm. The officer who went to her home saw the bear eating from a bird feeder. It was last seen heading for a wooded area behind the home after climbing over a six-foot privacy fence.
Two hours later, a bear was seen near the Carmike Wynnsong Theater on Kester Mill Road, according to police. Officers were once again called for a bear sighting; they found it by the intersection of Jonestown Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard. They said the bear was moving towards Kirk Road, behind a Wendy's restaurant.
A police report said both Forsyth County Animal Control and NC Wildlife Commission were called, but neither chose to go investigate. A reverse 911 system notified area residents about the sightings.
Police said the bear weighs about 150-200 pounds and did not appear to be aggressive. Community members are advised not to approach the bear.
