Durham, N.C. -- A Durham County Clerk confirmed to WFMY News 2 all charges against P.J. Hairston that originated on June 5 have been dropped.

After being stopped in rental car on June 5, Hairston was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession and for driving without a license. Both of those charges have been dropped. The district attorney said Hairston was able to produce a valid license and completed a drug assessment program.

According to the clerk, the only charge that still remains stems from a speeding ticket in May. Hairston still has an Aug. 2 court date for that incident.

During the June and the May incidents, Hairston was driving rental cars linked back to a convicted felon. Now, officials are investigating why Hairston was driving those rental cars and whether his use of those vehicles potentially violated any NCAA rules.

Guilford College Sports Studies Professor Robert Malekoff said UNC is carefully examining the situation to determine what to do next.

"Some people say that athletics is the front porch of the university. It can be extraordinarily positive, or it can be extraordinarily negative, depending on how people behave and what the issues are. I think, in the last decade or so, there has been more pressure on universities to deal directly with issues of misbehavior by students," Malekoff said.

A UNC spokesperson told WFMY News 2 the university has no comment about the charges being dropped.
