DURHAM, N.C. -- North Carolina Central University campus police have shot and killed a man they said fired at them twice on school grounds.

According to a note from University President Dr. Debra Saunders-White, leaders put the school on lockdown around 10:15 pm Monday. Police told WRAL there were reports of shots fired near Cecil St. and Alston Ave.

Officers said they found the alleged gunman around 1 a.m., but the man challenged them with a shotgun. The officers then shot and killed the man.

They have not released his name at this time but said he is not a student at NCCU.

Saunders-White told students and staff classes at the School of Education would be relocated Tuesday. She will hold a community town hall meeting later this morning.

Stay with for any new developments.
