West Union, SC -- Officials in a small South Carolina mountain town say they've accepted the mayor's apology for a Facebook post criticizing a decision that allowed gay couples to apply for marriage licenses.

In a news release from its attorney, the West Union town council said it met Friday and accepted an apology from Mayor Linda Oliver.

Oliver had used the word "queer" in a posting objecting to the register of deeds in Buncombe County, N.C., allowing gay couples to apply for marriage licenses Tuesday.

The post said God would not bless such unions. It was deleted, and Oliver said she would use the word "homosexual" in the future.

The town council says the post was Oliver's personal view and was offensive to many people, especially lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people.
