DURHAM, N.C. -- Authorities say they found stolen electronics in the backpack of a 17-year-old suspect who died in the custody of Durham Police.
In a sworn statement, police said they found the items last week.
Jesus Huerta died from a gunshot wound to his head Nov. 19 while handcuffed in the back seat of a police cruiser. He had been arrested on an outstanding warrant for trespassing after his family asked police to watch for him after he walked away from home following an argument.
Huerta's family doesn't believe Durham police and want a federal investigation.
Durham Mayor Bill Bell says the city will release its report this week into Huerta's death. Police have said no officer fired a weapon, and that evidence suggests Huerta somehow shot himself.
