STONEVILLE, N.C. -- Officials say someone driving the wrong way on a highway, while running from a deputy, hit and killed the occupants of another vehicle.
The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office says the deputy chased the driver of an F150 twice before the crash. Each time, the driver crossed the border into Virginia.
First, the deputy saw the truck late Thursday night in Stoneville. The deputy said it looked suspicious. As he approached the truck, the driver took off on Price Road. The deputy chased after the truck on U.S. 220, but had to stop once the driver crossed the state line.
Then, the deputy saw the driver again early Friday morning. He said the truck was driving erratically on Martinsville Loop Road. The deputy again tried to stop the driver.
According to the sheriff's office, the driver sped the wrong way up U.S. 220 into Virginia. Because of the driver's dangerous antics, the deputy continued to chase after the truck.
Before Virginia authorities could respond, the truck crashed head-on into another vehicle. The occupants of both vehicles died. It's not clear how many people were involved in the wreck.
No other information was released about the accident.
