Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - South Carolina women's assistant basketball
coach Nikki McCray has been diagnosed with a treatable form of breast cancer.
The school announced Monday that McCray learned of the diagnosis in November
and has begun treatment. She will continue to coach through the season.
"This will definitely be a challenge, but I am getting prepared to fight and
win this battle," said McCray, a former Tennessee All-American as a player in
her sixth year as a South Carolina assistant.
"We are a close family here at South Carolina and I will draw my strength from
God, my family and friends, our team, our staff and the fans. I am thankful
for everyone's continued support."
McCray was the SEC's top player during her junior and senior seasons at
Tennessee. She won a pair of Olympic gold medals and was a three-time WNBA
All-Star choice in her nine pro seasons.
