Winter Weather Blamed In Fatal Accidents

SURRY COUNTY, N.C.-- North Carolina Highway Patrol and Emergency 911 centers are responding to dozens of weather-related accidents.

At least two people have died in accidents in Surry County. John Shelton, Emergency Services Director, tells WFMY News 2 that one person was killed and four were injured after a pickup truck and minivan collided on NC Highway 104 near the Virginia line.

NC State Highway Patrol troopers said the accident happened around 1:16 p.m. when Jamie Sutton of Dan, VA lost control of a minivan in a curve, crossed the center line and hit the pickup truck. Joyce McDaniel who was a passenger in the van was killed as a result of the collision. Charges are pending in the accident.

The other fatal accident  happened on Poplar Springs Drive. Jean S. Conley, 68, died after a truck she was riding in crashed into a tree. According to NCSHP, Angela Blackburn was the driver. Investigators said the road was ice and snow covered. The accident happened around 1:24 p.m. Chargers are pending in this accident, Troopers said.

Communication Centers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol tell WFMY News 2 they've responded to more than 20 accidents since 9:00 a.m. TUesday morning. 

The accidents were reported in Forsyth, Davie, Stokes, Guilford, Caswell, Alamance and Rockingham counties.
