Buying A New Car? How To Get The Best Deal

Balance of features and value, don't get caught up with options 

The automotive market has changed dramatically over the years, not only in the quality of products produced, but the model varieties that manufacturers produce.  It was common practice 50+ years ago to offer one nameplate, such as the Ford Super Deluxe in a wide variety of body styles (4 door sedan, 2 door sedan, 2 door coupe, business coupe, etc.)

Today, aside from your typical convertibles and coupes, more often than not, manufacturers will offer one simple model, such as the 2014 Mazda6, that you can then build and tailor to your wants and desires via trim levels.  In other words, it means that while model selection has become simpler over time, within the past few years, it has once again began to feel overwhelming with the seemingly endless options when it comes to technology and features. 

Heated seats are no longer the big WOW in the automotive world, now we have mobile connectivity, infotainment/navigation systems, concert quality audio, heated steering wheels, and a tremendous amount of available safety innovations like adaptive cruise control.  While features and desirable options make a car very enticing at first glance and may bump resale value a bit, it may not be what you truly need and want.  Based on your budget, it's up to you to find the best balance between features and price.  Another thing to be aware of are the option groups.  You'll see often that brands group desirable options into special packages, somewhat of an all or nothing package that requires you to get a lot, while you may just want a little. 

This can add a lot to a car that may not be worth those extra features.  It's not uncommon to see a car that starts around $15,000 to have over $10,000 of extra options attached to it.  It's good to be aware, while it may be great having all of those options, that higher price may now be pushed into another car territory, where you can buy a larger, faster, fancier automobile instead.  Word to the wise, know what kind of car you're looking for and in terms of your budget and potential resale value, is it worth all of the gadgets?

Getting the best deal with current inventory, more deals happen when the car is on the ground

This is a very simple concept!  Just like items in a furniture store, the longer it sits, the more discounts that are likely to come about.  While not always the case, it's a likely trend to see across the board.  Especially for high volume dealers that try to not let the stock become stale, always refreshing it for brand new stock.  It's always easier to talk price and negotiations when the car is on the ground and at the premises versus having to source the car from another dealer or placing a custom order.  Let's not forget the model year end clearance sales!  Those are some fantastic opportunities to score a great deal on the car of your dreams.

When possible, deal with your local dealerships, having that personal relationship makes the difference

 When people ask me to give them advice on where they should buy their new car, I always ask "why don't you check out 'joe so-and-so' down the road"?  A lot of times, people let price drive their car search.  While price is obviously important, it's that local relationship that can matter the most.  Of course, some certain circumstances may prevent you from dealing local, in that case as well, there's a certain common element I'd like to stress.  Deal with the place that treats you like family.  Personally, I'm not a fan of pushy salespeople, stuffy environments, and the big business feel.  It doesn't matter whether they're your small independent or the high volume dealer down the road, to see a company take the extra step to make your car buying experience a joyful, pleasurable experience makes all the difference in the world.  After all, buying a car should be a fun and exciting time, after all, you will be spending a lot of time in that car!

 Take advantage of new car incentives, especially when buying local

 A lot of dealerships have promotional specials, packages and benefits to keep their local customers as they build their dealership family.  This is very important when choosing which dealership to buy from. 

For example, if you're looking at a certain brand, but at 2 dealerships.  Let's say the price is similar between the two, but the dealer 9 hours away has a lifetime tire promotion, where you have free tires for as long as you own the car!  What if they also had free oil changes for a few years, in addition to some cleaning packages?  If you purchase that far away car, you no longer have direct access to that dealership. 

In other words, you can no longer take advantage of those great services.  Many of the big name dealers do offer some sort of packages, but they often differ between store to store.  At that point, it's up to you to see which one entices you the most.  Make sure the one you choose is easily accessible and wouldn't take up your entire day to make a trip over for a free oil change.
