WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Parts of the Salem Creek Greenway will be closed in February for construction.

Portions from South Main and Vargrave streets will close in early February for construction on the Salem Creek Connector.

The streets will be closed for nearly 18 months.

Greenway users will need to use Salem Avenue, Rams Drive and Vargrave Street. The detour route is completely connected to sidewalks for pedestrians.

Improvements are being made along the detour route to make it better for bicyclists:

  • Rams Drive is being reworked to create a "cycle track" that provides a two-way bicycle path on the street.  It's separated by posts from the vehicle lanes. This will be the first use of a cycle track in North Carolina.
  • Shared lanes markings will be installed on Vargrave Street so motorists know they're sharing the road with bicycles. The new connection from Vergrave Street to Salem Creek Greenway is under construction and will remain closed until the detour is lifted.
  • Bicyclists will use existing bike lanes on Salem Avenue. The intersection of Rams Drive and Salem Avenue is being reconfigured to make the crossing as safe as possible for cyclists.

A map of the detours can be found at DOT.CityofWS.org.
