Need A Name For Your New Christmas Pet? Top Pet Names Of 2009 Released

  • - A A A +, the largest online database of adoptable pets, announced its annual ranking of the 10 most popular names for adoptable pets in 2009. For the third year in a row, the No. 1 and No. 2 names for dogs are "Buddy" and "Max," respectively. "Lucy" took the No. 1 spot for cats, and "Smokey" came in as the second most popular feline-forename.

While many of the most common names have remained consistent year-to-year, for the first-time in recent history, "Bella" made the list for both cats and dogs. Additionally, common names for cats seen in years past including, "Kittens," "Princess," "Tigger," and "Missy" were replaced by "Midnight," "Daisy" and "Charlie."

2009 Top 10 Most Popular Dog Names were:
1) Buddy, 2) Max, 3) Daisy, 4) Lucy, 5) Charlie,  6) Bella, 7) Molly 8) Jack, 9) Sadie, and 10) Lady.

2009 Top 10 Most Popular Cat Names were:
1) Lucy, 2) Smokey, 3) Midnight, 4) Bella, 5) Molly, 6) Daisy,
7) Oreo, 8) Shadow, 9) Charlie, and 10) Angel.

Just for fun, is also once again sharing its favorite quirky, wacky and unusual names of the year. Selected from more than 170 submissions received via Facebook and Twitter, the following names were too hilarious to go unrecognized.

2009 Top 10 Most Unusual Names were:
1) Shyanne Thailand Moo Goo Guy Pan, 2) Mr. Tomfoolery Scardeycat Eliot, 3) Rusty Buckets, 4) KeelHaul, 5) Too Fancy for You, 6) Angry Donut, 7) Maple Syrup, 9) Hoseclamp, 9) Prince Xavier Binxley, and 10)Hoku-ho'okele-wa'a.

"I love the creativity that so many people use when choosing a name for their pet," said Betsy Saul, the co-founder of "While funny names are always a big hit, we are also seeing a trend of pet parents giving their furry friends middle names, such as 'Sunshine Ray,''Roxanna Bobanna Little' and 'Madison Wisconsin,' suggesting that these animals are more like family members than family pets."
