Randleman, NC -- The Randolph County District Attorney has dropped charges against the former principal of Randleman Elementary School.

Melanie Cuttriss-Curtis had been charged with Failure to Report a Criminal Offense On School Property.

District Attorney Garland Yates dismissed the charges after the North Carolina General Assembly amended the crime Cuttriss-Curtis was charged with.  The amendment eliminated any criminal penalty for violating the law.

The law now has the penalty for Failure to Report as exclusively "demotion or dismissal" of a school principal.

The original charges against Cuttriss-Curtis stem from an Indecent Liberties case involving a former teacher's aide at the school.  Richard Shane Silcox pled guilty on June 28 to felony offenses of Indecent Liberties with a Student and Indecent Liberties with a Child.  He also pled guilty to a misdemeanor offense of Sexual Battery.

Prosecutors said Silcox's guilty plea to Sexual Battery involved the incident that was the basis of the charges against Cuttriss-Curtis.

Silcox was sentenced to prison and must register as a sex offender.
